Man Utd were not able to leapfrog their Spanish opponents despite beating them at Estadio Anoeta.

Manchester United defeated Real Sociedad 1-0 in their Europa League game on Thursday. The narrow win wasn’t enough for the Red Devils to qualify as the Group E leaders.

Tough last-16 opponents for United!

Man Utd started the game on a brilliant note, immediately starting their attacks from both flanks.

Following an assist from Cristiano Ronaldo, Alejandro Garnacho rifled a powerful strike into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 17th minute.

It took a while for the hosts to find their feet in the game, but they eventually forced David De Gea to make a fantastic save just before half-time.

United continued their attacks to find the match-winner throughout the second period.

Scott McTominay and Casemiro came the closest, but Sociedad’s solid defence prevented Erik ten Hag’s side from doubling their lead.

The 1-0 win keep Man Utd at the second spot of the Group E table. The Red Devils might therefore draw the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, Sevilla, Ajax, and Bayer Leverkusen in the next round.

Erik ten Hag’s men will now prepare to take on Aston Villa in their next Premier League game on Sunday.
