The Polish striker joined the Catalans amid their struggles to get back into Europe’s elite.

Robert Lewandowski insists he expected to have a “tough” first season at Barcelona.

A sensational move from Bayern Munich saw the Polish star join the Catalans in the summer transfer window.

Lewandowski’s start to the season has been brilliant by every metric. The former Bayern star has scored 18 goals in his 17 appearances for the Catalans, sitting at the top of La Liga’s goalscoring charts.

However, Barcelona’s disappointing relegation to the Europa League has convinced many observers that Lewandowski might regret joining them at this stage.

Speaking to Marca ahead of his side’s final Champions League game of the season against Viktoria Plzen, the 34-year-old explained the logic behind his transfer to Camp Nou.

“With everything that Barça has suffered in recent years, you can’t expect everything to change in a month. It needs time and it will surely improve, and it will even be the best again,” Lewandowski told Marca.

“We are evolving. I did not expect to arrive and that everything went well in the first season, I insist that it is a process that requires time and patience.

“Before coming to Barcelona I was already aware that the first season could be tougher than it surely should be. We are in a reconstruction process that needs time, we have to be more patient.”
