The Portuguese superstar was dropped from Man Utd’s squad for the Chelsea game.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has defended Cristiano Ronaldo after his much-criticized reaction of leaving the pitch early against Tottenham.

Erik ten Hag revealed he had informed Ronaldo of his decision to send him in before he stormed down the tunnel. Frustrated by his lack of game time, CR7 seems to be at the end of his second spell at Man Utd.

However, Keane believes the Portugal international’s reaction shouldn’t prevent his possible comeback to the squad.

“There’s players at Man United who have done a lot worse than he’s done,” Keane insisted on Sky Sports.

“You know Paul Scholes. He refused to play for Man United. He got fined 2 weeks’ wages but he found his way back.

“Rio Ferdinand missed a drugs test, he got banned for eight months.”

Ronaldo’s former teammate, Gary Neville, however, believes CR7 must deal with the fact that Man Utd are better off without him.

“There aren’t many Manchester United fans right now who would take Cristiano Ronaldo in their starting 11,” Neville said.

“They’re better without him, they score more goals without him and they win more games without him. That’s a fact – he’s just got to get used to that.”

The recent controversy has cast serious doubts over Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford.

Reports of Chelsea‘s interest in signing the 37-year-old have already emerged in the English media. But the Blues’ lack of interest in the recent transfer window might indicate that Ronaldo would have to stay at United until the next summer.
