A late strike from Alvaro Morata sealed Spain’s narrow win as they went top of Group A2.
Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in their UEFA Nations League game on Tuesday. La Roja leapfrogged Portugal from Group A2’s top spot with a solid performance in Braga.
A late winner!
Spain quickly established their control over possession early on despite a few dangerous attacks from the hosts.
La Roja came close to breaking the deadlock several times before the half-time whistle but couldn’t convert their chances.
The hosts looked much better as soon as the second period started. Quick runs from Joao Cancelo down the right-hand side exposed Spain’s vulnerability to the counter-attacks.
However, La Roja’s insist on sending crosses into their opponents’ box paid off when Nico Williams turned one of them into an assist for Morata.
The Atletico Madrid star then nodded the ball home, to win the game for the guests in the 88th minute. Spain moved ahead of Portugal on the Group A2 table with the victory, qualifying for the final phase of the tournament.
