The Citizens are pushing to sign a new defender before the transfer window deadline.

Manchester City are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Borussia Dortmund over the transfer of Manuel Akanji.

The Switzerland international has entered the final year of his Dortmund contract, with the club hoping to avoid a free departure next summer.

According to The Athletic, the German side are open to selling Akanji for a fee of around €17.5m.

The 27-year-old will join the likes of Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Nathan Ake as Man City’s centre-back choices.

It won’t be easy for Akanji to find game time at Etihad, especially when Laporte recovers from injury.

However, his presence will provide a new reliable defender for City, who have started the season with poor defensive form.

Akanji quickly developed into a regular starter for Dortmund after his move from Basel in 2018.

However, the arrivals of Niklas Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck have pushed him down the pecking order at Signal Iduna Park.

Man City have added Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez and Stefan Ortega to their squad this summer.

However, it seems their transfer business in the current window is not over yet.

“I don’t know what will happen,” Guardiola responded when asked if City would sign a new player this summer.

Following an inspiring comeback against Newcastle last weekend, the Citizens will host Nottingham Forest in their next league game on Wednesday.
