The Brazil international joins Man Utd on the back of a wonderful spell at Real Madrid.

Wayne Rooney has expressed his doubts over Manchester United’s signing of Casemiro.

The Brazil international has been a crucial part of Real Madrid‘s midfield line in recent years, winning five Champions League titles and three La Liga trophies at the club.

Casemiro’s arrival comes after United’s unsuccessful attempts to sign Frenkie de Jong. However, Rooney believes the Red Devils must have stuck to their original plan of signing a younger option.

“This goes back to the need to look to the future,” the Man Utd legend told the Times.

“Ideally, they should be signing players in their early to mid-twenties, and Casemiro is similar to Christian Eriksen. He’s someone who has been a good player.

“But are they going to help the club move forward? Frenkie de Jong, Ten Hag’s principal midfield target, would be a better fit.”

He added: “The Casemiro deal seems to have come from nowhere and looks like a reactive signing — I would be surprised if he was a player identified as a priority to bring in when ten Hag arrived.

“It looks like, having been unable to sign de Jong, United just reacted to Casemiro being available.”
