The Reds will have to face Man City without two key players on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota will not play for Liverpool in their upcoming Community Shield match against Manchester City.
Alisson has stayed out of action since sustaining an injury in Liverpool’s first pre-season match earlier this summer.
The Brazilian star was expected to make his comeback against Man City. But Klopp has confirmed he won’t return before Liverpool’s opening match of the new Premier League season.
“Alisson trained today more today than the day before. He will definitely be available for Fulham, but not for the weekend,” Klopp told reporters on Thursday.
Diogo Jota, who has missed Liverpool’s entire pre-season campaign, is also out of Klopp’s squad for the game.
Asked about a possible return date for the Portuguese star, Klopp simply replied: “It will take a while.”
The German boss added: “The Community Shield is a very important game. It’s the last domestic cup competition we haven’t won yet, so we’ll give it a try,” the German coach said. “It’s a very important game, but we still have to prepare for a whole season.
“I can’t ignore the fact that after the game is a season – we will have to extend our pre-season into the season.”
