The Lionesses reached the Euro 2021 final by smashing Sweden 4-0 on Wednesday.
England star Alessia Russo scored a brilliant backheel goal in the Lionesses’ 4-0 win over Sweden in their Euro 2021 semi-final clash.
Russo scored her fourth goal of the tournament as England moved one step closer to the continental title.
Following a failed attempt to score from close range, Russo moved the ball away toward the edge of the six-yard box. However, her sudden decision to go for a backheel goal caught Sweden defenders off guard, Nutmeging goalkeeper Hedvig Lindal before reaching the back of the net.
“To be honest, I missed the first [shot of the move], we were actually working on cut backs in training the other day,” Russo said.
“Once it fell back to me I thought ‘what’s the quickest route for me to get this ball in the back of the net?’ Because I should have scored in the first place, I just swung a foot at it and luckily it hit the back of the net.
“I think [it was one of my best goals]. Yeah of course, to score in a semi final and progress to the final is a huge highlight of my career. I don’t normally score back heels and I don’t think you’ll see one again, I’ll take it for now.”
England hope to claim their first European Championship title when they play the tournament’s final on Sunday. The Lionesses will discover their opponents when Germany take on France in their semi-final clash later tonight.
