The Selecao legend says having too many options could backfire during Brazil’s upcoming World Cup campaign.
Cafu has admitted the Brazilian national team’s relationship with their fans has worsened since their last World Cup triumph.
The AC Milan legend captained Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002, the last time Selecao lifted football’s biggest trophy.
Since then, the flow of exceptional Brazilian talents has not stopped. However, the Selecao seem to be missing an element to finally end their wait to become the World Champions again.
“It’s a World Cup year and we cannot be sure of who will go to Qatar, unfortunately,” Cafu told the Guardian.
“It’s very different from the feeling in 2002, when everybody knew who would start and who had the most chance to be subbed in during a game.
“The fans knew our story and where we played. The fans felt close to the squads. There’s a distance between fans and the national squad and it’s been growing since 2010.”
He added: “Can we be sure Alisson will start the games when Ederson is playing like he is? Or that Weverton won’t be able to get the position after his titles with Palmeiras?
“The only secured player is Neymar, because he is the best. Then we have other guys pursuing a spot, such as Vinicius Junior.”
Neymar has hinted he might retire from international football after the upcoming Qatar tournament. Let’s see if the PSG star can replicate Cafu by captaining Brazil to another World Cup title in November.
