Manchester City have ended Erling Haaland’s transfer saga by confirming their agreement with the young striker.

The Citizens have agreed to trigger a £51 million release clause in Haaland’s contract to sign him ahead of the next season.

Several top European clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, had shown interest in acquiring the services of the 21-year-old. But, Haaland will follow in the footsteps of his father, who played for the Citizens in the early 2000s.

Man City’s official statement reads: “Manchester City can confirm we have reached an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of striker Erling Haaland to the Club on 1st July 2022.

“The transfer remains subject to the Club finalising terms with the player.”

The departure of Sergio Aguero left the Citizens without a fully-fledged number nine last summer. Pep Guardiola’s side avoided entering the winter transfer market for a new striker. But they have now completed one of the most anticipated moves of the next window.

Haaland will join an already star-studded attacking line at the Etihad Stadium. The Norwegian star will play alongside the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva next season.

Having scored 85 goals in his 88 appearances for Dortmund, Haaland will hope to re-energise City to fulfil their long-awaited dream of winning the Champions League.
