Let’s find out which African stars have spent a better 2021-22 Bundesliga campaign.

Bundesliga hosts some of the most promising African talents who are trying to kick-start their European careers in the German top flight.

They follow in the footsteps of generations of African players breaking into Germany’s football scene. Alongside these youngsters, however, there are established African stars who play in some of the biggest German clubs.

Let’s take a look at the top African footballers currently active in the Bundesliga.

5- Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting 🇨🇲

Choupo Moting joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in October 2020. The Bavarians gave him a one-year-deal at the beginning but later on extended his deal for another two seasons.

The Cameroon star plays as a backup for Robert Lewandowski, but his performances have convinced Julian Nagelsmann to also use him as a second striker.

The 33-year-old won his second Bundesliga title this season, making 18 appearances for the Bavarians. He has registered nine goals and two assists across all competitions, an impressive record if you consider how many minutes he has played.

Choupo’s current deal runs until June 2023. Let’s see if he can earn another contract with his performances next season.

4- Ellyes Skhiri 🇹🇳

Since joining Koln from Montpellier in 2019, Skhiri has developed into a key player in the Bundesliga side’s midfield.

The Tunisian star has made 21 appearances for the Goats this season, providing them with much-needed defensive stability. His physical appearance in Koln’s midfield has contributed to their impressive defensive stats.

Koln have a decent chance of securing a place in the next season’s Europa League. We might see Skhiri in one of the biggest stages of European football next season.

3- Ramy Bensebaini 🇩🇿

Bensebaini has established himself as one of the best Bundesliga left-backs in recent seasons. The Monchengladbach defender is famous for his attacking skills while also playing a key role in Gladbach’s backline.

A sudden dip in form saw Gladbach slip to the bottom half of the league table this season. However, the Bundesliga giants have managed to climb higher in recent weeks as a result of their newly-find defensive form.

Bensebaini is linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund ahead of the summer transfer window. The Algeria international’s pace makes him an ideal choice for the Black and Yellows’ transitional play. But his key role in Gladbach’s defence line and the departures of Mathias Ginter and Denis Zakaria might convince the club to block a transfer.

2- Edmond Tapsoba 🇧🇫

A 2020 transfer from Vitoria Guimares has seen Taposoba develop into one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga.

The Burkinabe has played a significant role in Leverkusen’s successful campaign, playing as a regular starter for the Bundesliga giants.

A defensive duo of Tapsoba and Jonathan Tah has provided Leverkusen with defensive integrity, helping them reclaim their spot in Bundesliga’s top-four.

Tabsoba attracted interest from Arsenal last summer, but the move never materialized. Considering the 23-year-old’s performances this season, Die Werkself might receive more offers for their star centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.

1- Taiwo Awoniyi 🇳🇬

Awoniyi is our pick for the best African player in this season’s Bundesliga.

The Nigerian star made his loan move from Liverpool permanent in July 2021 to become one of the best Bundesliga strikers this season.

Awoniyi’s performances have been vital to Union’s dream run in the league this season. The Berliners are now on the verge of securing a European spot for the next season while having one of the best defensive stats in the entire league.

Union’s defensive stability is only completed with the presence of Awoniyi as their target striker. The Super Eagles star has scored 13 goals and two assists in his 30 appearances for the Berliners this season.

West Ham, Southampton and Leicester City are reportedly keen to bring Awoniyi back to the Premier League. However, Union will most likely do their best to keep their star striker ahead of the next season.
