A hard-fought win over Chelsea bagged crucial points for the Toffees in their relegation battle.
Everton defeated Chelsea 1-0 in their Premier League game on Sunday. The Blues put their third spot on the table in danger as they failed to escape the defeat at Goodison Park.
A season-deciding win for Everton!
Similar to their last few displays, Chelsea struggled to find a strong start to the game. On the other hand, Everton were reluctant to go all-in with their efforts to score the opener as Chelsea seemed dangerous on the counter-attacks.
Following a goalless first half, Everton got what they were looking for only a minute after the interval.
A defensive blunder from Cesar Azpilicueta gave the possession away to Richarlison, who then made 1-0 for the hosts with a precise low shot.
Chelsea immediately started their efforts to get back into the game, with Havertz missing a huge chance just before the half-time.
However, Jordan Pickford’s brilliant performance and Chelsea’s lack of composure prevented the Blues from scoring the equalizer.
What’s next for Chelsea and Everton?
Everton are now only two points away from escaping the relegation zone as they sit in 18th place behind Leeds United.
On the other hand, third-placed Chelsea now feel more pressure from Tottenham, who are five points behind them on the table. The Blues will face Wolves in their next league game while Everton prepare to meet Leicester City.
