The Ligue 1 leaders have taken a significant step into entering the Metaverse.

Paris Saint-Germain have filed a new trademark application to register an online presence on the Metaverse.

The French giants filed to register their name for non-fungible tokens (NFT) and Metaverse products and services on March 16.

The trademark application includes the use of downloadable multimedia files (text, audio, video, etc), goods for both the online and offline virtual worlds, virtual clothing, sports gear, electronics, and cryptocurrency wallet software.

Metaverse trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis shared the full details of PSG’s application on Twitter on Monday.

‘PSG sees the potential of the Metaverse’

“Paris Saint-Germain is one of the world’s best-known football clubs, and the value attached to the team’s name and brand is substantial,” Mr. Kondoudis said.

“This filing represents the next logical step to protect the brand as it moves into the Metaverse. Clearly, PSG sees the potential of the Metaverse and is preparing its trademark for the virtual economy that will dominate it.”

Mr. Kondoudis added: “We expect the number of trademark filings from the professional sports sector for NFT and virtual products and services to increase over the next twelve months as brands come to appreciate the need for protections in the Metaverse.”

Football interest continues to grow

PSG are not the first football club to recognize the Metaverse’s potential to attain new business opportunities.

Premier League leaders Manchester City have established a partnership with Sony to build the world’s first football stadium inside the Metaverse.

In La Liga, Barcelona plan to develop their own cryptocurrency, NFTs and Metaverse. Joan Laporta, the club’s president, revealed these details at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this month.
