Top 5 African players in PSG’s history

France’s strong cultural and political ties with African countries have made the country a gateway for many African players to enter European football.

Young stars, especially those from French-speaking countries, have formed a crucial part of France’s football, both at the club and international levels.

As one of Ligue 1’s greatest clubs, PSG have a long history of using African players in their squads. Active players such as Idrissa Gueye and Achraf Hakimi have are following the footsteps of some of the greatest players in the continent’s history.

Let’s take a look at the top players to have played for the French giants.

5- Patrick Mboma 🇨🇲

Mboma started his career at PSG’s academy ranks, finally breaking through their senior squad in 1990. The club sent the Cameroon star on two loan deals before returning him in 1996.

Mboma featured in only 24 games for the Parisians, scoring six goals. He won a Coupe de France at the club before leaving as a free agent in 1997.

The move, however, turned out to be a complete mistake from the French giants. The Cameroonian forward went on to become one of the best players of Serie A during his time at Cagliari in the early 2000s.

Mboma won the African Footballer of the Year award in 2000, before winning back to back AFCON titles with Cameroon. Following his successful Serie A spell, Mboma moved to Japan, where he retired from football at Vissel Kobe.

4- Mustapha Dahleb 🇩🇿

Dahleb rose to stardom in Algerian football by playing for Belcourt. A short loan spell at French side CS Sedan persuaded to sign the Algerian star in 1974.

The left-winger went on to make 104 appearances for the French giants while establishing himself as a starter at Algeria. He played as part of Les Fennecs’ squad in the 1982 World Cup.

The Algeria great held the record for most league goals scored for PSG for years. His tally of 85 Ligue 1 goals was finally surpassed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in December 2015.

Dahleb won two Coupe de France titles during his ten-year stay at Parc des Princes. He left the club in 1947 to join Nice, where he retired a year later.

3- Oumar Sène 🇸🇳

Having won the Senegal Premier League with US Goree, Sene was already building toward becoming a regular starter for the Lions of Teranga. However, a move to the French side Stade Lavallois in 1981 provided an opportunity for the midfielder to showcase his qualities in Ligue 1.

Having spent four successful seasons at Lavallois, Sene joined PSG in 1985. He quickly developed into a crucial player under Gérard Houllier, helping the club in their first-ever Ligue 1 triumph a year after his transfer.

Sene made 185 appearances for the Parisians, scoring 15 goals. He stayed for seven years at Parc des Prince and left the club when retiring in 1992.

2- Jay-Jay Okocha 🇳🇬

Most football fans know Okocha for his successful spell at Eintracht Frankfurt and Bolton. However, the Nigeria great have made almost the same number of appearances for PSG.

Following his departure from Eintracht, Okocha moved to the Turkish side Fenerbahce, where he stayed for two years before joining PSG in 1998. The Parisians paid a £14 million fee for Okocha, which made him the most expensive African player until then.

During his four-year stay at Parc des Princes, Okocha featured in 113 games for the Parisians. He became a mentor for young Ronaldinho, who was at the beginning stages of his career.

Having claimed a French Super Cup title at PSG, the AFCON winner left PSG to join Bolton on a free move in 2002.

1- George Weah 🇱🇷

Weah is the greatest African star to have played for PSG. The Liberian star is the only African player who has won the Ballon d’Or.

Weah did not claim the prestigious prize while playing for the French giants. However, his three-year stint at Parc des Princes certainly served as a significant stepping stone toward his glorious days in Milan.

The current Liberia president featured in 133 games for the Ligue 1 giants, scoring 50 goals. He won a Ligue 1 title, a French League Cup, and two Coupe de France trophies during his stay in Paris. Weah also won the Best FIFA Men’s Player award in his last season at the club before joining the Rossoneri in 1995.
