The French midfielder opens up on his unimpressive spell at the north London side.

Tanguy Ndombele returned to Lyon on a loan deal until the end of the season on Monday. The Frenchman left Tottenham amid his struggles to get game under Antonio Conte.

Conte, however, was not the only Tottenham boss who left Ndombele out of his squad. Since his £63million move from Lyon, the midfielder has failed to live up to expectations at Spurs. This season he slipped behind Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp and Harry Winks in Spurs’ pecking order.

A day after his move back to Ligue 1, Ndombele opened up on his difficult time at Tottenham.

He told RMC Sport: “I’ve known five managers in two and a half years. It’s not their fault, but I struggled a bit at Tottenham. I wanted something else. Lyon, because I know it, it’s better to adapt.”

Paris Saint-Germain were reportedly keen to sign Ndombele on a loan deal, but he eventually ended up returning to Lyon. Asked about how the transfer took place, the 25-year-old responded:

“There were talks with quite a lot of clubs, but there was a gap between words and actions. I have three and a half months before the end of the season, and Lyon isn’t bad for me. I left through the front door, and returning is a risk. I took that risk.

“I think I’m a better player than when I left. I learned things in England, even if it didn’t go well. I’m better physically and mentally.”

On his potential return to Spurs, Ndombele added: “It’s not over. I still belong to the club. I didn’t have pressure from the transfer amount.”

Ndombele can make his second debut for Lyon in their Ligue 1 game against Monaco on Saturday.
