Cristiano Ronaldo blocked Transfermarkt over market value downgrade

The Portuguese superstar blocked Transfermarkt after he found out about his €75m price tag on the website.

In March 2020, Transfermarkt published a ‘Jorge Mendes XI’ on Instagram, made up of players represented by the Portuguese agent. Cristiano Ronaldo was the second most expensive player in the lineup, following €100m-valued Bernardo Silva

Shortly after publishing the graphic, Transfermarkt explained why they had not tagged Ronaldo.

“We can’t tag Ronaldo because he blocked us after he saw his market value”, the transfer website wrote.

Transfermarkt have now lifted the lid on how the incident happened. Speaking to the Athletic, the website’s coordinator Christian Schwarz said: “He sent a message first to our social media guys.

“They answered him, explained why, and told him, ‘The people in your age group, you are by far the number one’.

“It was £30-50 million difference [between Ronaldo and the next player on the list], and then he sent some smilies, and then he blocked us.”

Since then, Transfermarkt has reduced Ronaldo’s market value to £31.5m. However, similar to the actual transfer market, age plays a significant role in how much players are worth on the website.

“Age is now one of the most important factors,” Schwarz said. “And Cristiano Ronaldo is old, same with Lionel Messi, and they will get their value reduced just because of their age.

“Even if they are just as good as three years ago, they are three years older.”
