The Reds leapfrogged Chelsea to go second in the Premier League as they secured an easy against Brentford.
Liverpool defeated Brentford 3-0 in their Premier League game on Sunday. The Reds achieved their first victory in four league games while Brentford slipped further down on the table.
Home win for the Reds!
Liverpool quickly gained possession at the start of the second half, creating chances down both flanks. However, they were not able to break the deadlock until the last minute of the first half.
Following a corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho powered a header into the bottom-right corner of the net. Liverpool started the second half by continuing their attacks while remaining cautious to avoid dangerous counter-attacks.
The Reds’ plan paid off when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain doubled their lead nine minutes past the hour-mark. Another header, but this time the cross came from Andrew Robertson, who made an impressive run from the left-hand side.
Brentford tried to maintain possession in their own half but could not resist Liverpool’s high pressing. Following a defensive mix-up by the Brentford players, Roberto Firmino provided an inch-perfect assist for Takumi Minamino. The Japan international made it 3-0 from close range as soon as he received the ball.
Liverpool had a few more chances to extend their leads. However, Alvaro Fernandez did a great job of preventing the Liverpool forwards from scoring more goals.
The victory ends Liverpool’s three-game winless run in the Premier League. They go above Chelsea to claim second place on the league table. Jurgen Klopp’s side will face Arsenal in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal tie on Thursday.
On the other hand, Brentford suffered their fourth defeat in five games, slipping to 14th place in the league. The Bees will host Manchester United in their next league battle on Wednesday.
