The Arsenal midfielder joins the Serie A side on a loan deal until the end of the current season.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles sparked controversy by publicly asking the club to loan him out in August. He failed to force a move in the summer. However, he has now secured a loan move away from the north London side.

On Saturday, Roma announced they have signed Maitland-Niles on a loan deal until the end of the season. He will link up with his England teammates Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham at the Olimpico Stadium.

“I am just delighted to be here and can’t wait to crack on,” the English defender said.

“I want to help the team and show what I can do as a player.

“Thank you to the fans for the support they’ve already shown me – I hope we can go on to do something great by the end of the season.”

The transfer will provide Jose Mourinho’s side with a timely boost. The Giallorossi have been struggling for form recently, slipping to seventh place on the Serie A table.

Since Leonardo Spinazzola’s Achilles injury in Euro 2020, Roma have not played with a reliable full-back in their lineup. Maitland-Niles have enough experience to play both as a midfielder and a full-back.

The 24-year-old spent a loan deal at West Bromwich Albion last season, where he featured in 15 matches. This season he made only appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side, with his last game being against Liverpool in November.
