With the Africa Cup of Nations being only a month away, speculations over its potential postponement still hang around. The new wave of COVID-19 infections in Africa has generated concerns over the participants’ health.

Cameroon is neighbour to some of the countries worst hit by the omicron variant. However, it has reportedly vaccinated only five per cent of its entire population.

Napoli lawyer Mattia Grassani says the club might take legal action to stop players from participating in the AFCON tournament.

“Given the epidemiological situation, warnings and other similar situations may start,” he told Calcionapoli24.it.

“This competition takes away important resources from the clubs. This is a particular historical moment, it would be different if there was 99 per cent security and the situation was clear.

“[Napoli] have invested a lot of money in signing Victor Osimhen and if he were to come back infected it would be tough.

“The first step would be a warning [to prevent a call up] then if there were concrete elements to sue because the health standards are not the same as in European competitions, then there could be more appeals to gain an exemption for Europe-based players.”

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is among the key players for Nigeria national team. The 22-year-old suffered a serious face injury last month. However, he has announced he will be ready to play for his country in January.

Osimhen has been a key player for Napoli since the start of the season. The Nigeria star has scored nine goals in his 14 appearances for Napoli this season while establishing a reputation as one of the most in-form Serie A strikers. His potential absence in AFCON will be a huge blow for the Super Eagles.
