The German manager says Liverpool have no plans of selling one of their key defenders this winter.

Joe Gomez was a regular starter alongside Virgil Van Dijk before a knee injury that changed his place in the squad. Following a return from injury, the Liverpool defender has struggled to regain his top form.

Having fallen down the pecking order, Gomez sees Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip ahead of him for the lineup spot. Konate, in particular, has displayed great form recently, securing his place as a strong backup. Liverpool even have Nat Phillips for the position. However, he will most likely leave the club this January.

According to 90min, Gomez is aware that his lack of game time might affect his place in England’s squad. The player is keen to get regular playing time to have a chance for the next year’s Qatar World Cup.

Jurgen Klopp, however, has ruled out a January exit for the player despite admitting he has had a tough year.

“It was obviously not the best year for him, but that’s how it goes,” Klopp said of Gomez. “We are patient, and Joe is patient.

“I have no plans to give anybody on loan in the winter.”

The Liverpool manager also spoke about his teams’ situation regarding the current COVID-19 crisis in the league.

“Yesterday we were all negative and we hope that is the case for today,

“We are, like the whole world, concerned about it. The vaccination status of the squad is good. Those eligible got the booster.

“The whole vaccination thing is a question of loyalty, solidarity and togetherness.

“Everyone working at the training ground is at least double-vaccinated and will get the booster as soon as possible.”

Liverpool will face Newcastle in their next game on Thursday before meeting Tottenham three days later.
