European clubs worry over Omicron risk at AFCON

Numerous African players will travel to their respective countries for AFCON early next year, and the European clubs are worried.

The European Club Association (ECA) have expressed their concern about the danger of sending players to the forthcoming African Cup of Nations following the outbreak of the Omicron Covid-19 variant that was found in South Africa last month.

AFCON is set to begin on January 9 in Cameroon and will run its course until February 6. And eventually, many athletes across Europe will join their respective national teams to take part in the major tournament.

Although, a good amount of countries have already initiated implementing lockdown protocols along with other restrictions. It is due to the fact that the new variant Omicron could spread like a wildfire if rules are not followed.

Taking into account the possible threat, the ECA has affirmed that they will speak with FIFA over the total safety of players ahead of AFCON.

A statement from ECA stated: “The Board also expressed its deep concerns around player safety and welfare ahead of the African Cup Nations. And upcoming international windows in early 2022, particularly in light of the worsening public health situation. And the severe challenges faced during recent international windows.”

“The Board agreed to engage urgently with FIFA to ensure all necessary precautions are in place to protect players. And club interests as the health situation continues to deteriorate in an alarming manner.”
