Tottenham boss Antonio Conte believes Cristian Romero has suffered a ‘serious’ hamstring injury.
Cristian Romero limped off Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil earlier this month. Since his return to Tottenham, the player has been out of action, with his return date yet known.
Ahead of Thursday’s Europa Conference League match against NS Mura, Spurs boss Antonio Conte provided an update on Romero’s injury.
“Honestly, I think his injury is serious. We have to wait,” Conte said (via Sky Sports).
“I don’t know the time he needs to recover. Surely his injury is more serious than Giovani Lo Celso or Dane Scarlett.
“We have to wait for the next scan and then the doctor can give more information on the dates for his recovery.”
Romero started the first two matches under Conte against Vitesse and Everton. Many observers see the Argentine as a player who fits well within Conte’s plan. However, an unfortunate injury might sideline him for a long period.
Unlike former Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo, Conte says he will use his first-team players for the Conference League games.
“All the players available will come with us,” Conte added. “They must be ready to play against Mura. I said on Sunday that I need to make rotation because there are players that are a bit tired because they played many games with the national team and also we worked a lot in the last two weeks.
“There are other players that need game time. For us this competition is important. We want to take this fixture seriously and we want to go through to the next step.
“For sure I will make the rotation because personally I need to know much better the players, because there are players I need to see during a game and a competition.”
Europa Conference league might provide Conte with a chance to end the Spurs’ trophy drought. However, it is unlikely that this will satisfy Tottenham fans, as they expect Conte to return the Spurs to the form they enjoyed under former boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Following their match against Murra, Tottenham will face Burnley in their next Premier League game on Sunday.
