There have been rumors over the past week suggesting that Gernot Rohr’s spell as the Nigeria head coach could soon end.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ‘can’t do anything’ about the future of national team manager Gernot Rohr.

While a 1-1 draw against Cape Verde last week was enough to send Nigeria into the playoffs for a 2022 World Cup spot, it did little to ease the growing speculation on Rohr’s future.

Fans have grown impatient with the German ahead of the AFCON tournament in January and the World Cup next year.

Reports have since emerged over the past week claiming the NFF had relieved Rohr of his duties, with some sources claiming that Serbian coach Mladen Krstajic could become Nigeria’s next manager.

NFF’s stance revealed

An unnamed top NFF official, however, has told The Guardian that no decision has been made on Rohr’s future.

“We can’t do anything about Rohr now,” the official said. “I have read a lot of stories on social media saying that the NFF has told Rohr to go. People are just peddling all sorts of rumors, but I can tell you that we have not taken any decision to that effect. That is our position.”

The Guardian added that releasing Rohr from his contract, which runs until December 2022, could cost the NFF around $2 million (N822m/€1.7m).

The football federation cannot afford to pay such a fee, so the only way out appears for Rohr to resign from his post.
