Pep Guardiola & Manchester City’s four-year Carabao Cup reign came to an end as they lost 5-3 on penalties to West Ham on Wednesday night.
Pep Guardiola had better words about West Ham in spite of Manchester City’s penalty shootout exit from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
This one was particularly a painful departure for the Cityzens having won the cup four times in a row. A squad rotation turned out to be a poor choice for Guardiola’s side as they could not break through the Hammers.
After a goalless 90 minutes, the game went on to the penalties. However, Phil Foden’s missed attempt cost City as West Ham slotted all the five shots to push their opponents out of the competition.
At the post-match press, Guardiola praised West Ham by saying: “Not just this season, the previous one (too). One of the toughest games we played at home when one side was better than us last season was West Ham.”
“They’re doing well in the Premier League and the Europa League and now they are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.”
“(They are a) fantastic team, (and have a) fantastic manager. We knew it. We did our game. I didn’t see the stats, but I thought we did a good game.”
The City boss was pleased with his team’s performance as well as he added: “An incredible run has finished (but) we finished in a good way. We played in a really good way, creating chances against a team who defended deep.”
“On penalties, they were better. Congratulations to West Ham. Next year we will be back.”
