Patson Daka backed to capitalize on ‘blessed’ Leicester role

By scoring four times in Leicester City’s Europa League win, Patson Daka gave fans a glimpse into the post-Jamie Vardy era.

Brendan Rodgers has backed Patson Daka to capitalize on the ‘blessed’ position the striker finds himself in as he looks to succeed Jamie Vardy.

The Zambia international lived up to his €30 million transfer fee from RB Salzburg in the summer by scoring all four of Leicester’s goals in a 4-3 victory over Spartak Moscow in the Europa League on Wednesday.

The way Daka sprinted past the last defender and his composed finishing in the game drew comparisons with the Foxes’ leading man Vardy – whom he rates as one of his idols.

“He’s been one of my inspirations,” Daka said as per Leicester Mercury. “I’m sure you can tell with the play style I have. It’s kind of similar to him. It’s a very big privilege for me to be working alongside him. He helps me a lot in training, and I keep learning every single day. I’m just blessed to be in this position.”

Now Rodgers expects Daka to learn from Vardy as he continues to path onto becoming Leicester’s main man in the future.

The Foxes boss said: “He’s the profile of a player we wanted to bring in. When we were looking for a striker, we needed someone who could be here over these next number of years, someone that of course can learn from Jamie.

“His profile was that he runs in behind and he’s a great finisher. You saw all of that [on Wednesday]. Since he came into the club, he’s not stopped smiling and he’s not stopped working. He’s in pole position to learn and he’s a clever guy, so he watches Jamie, of course, he does.

“But his talent is his talent, that’s what he does, he runs in behind, he finishes left foot, right foot, and he has a wonderful enthusiasm for the game. He’s a natural goalscorer like Jamie.”
