Metropolitano Stadium was the place where Liverpool visited Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. We have tonight’s player ratings.
Out of all Champions League games today, none was as exciting as Liverpool’s visit to Atletico Madrid for Group B’s activity. The Reds are coming in spectacular form that can only be compared to the season in which they also won the UEFA Champions League. Mohamed Salah is currently the most in-form player in the world. He proved this tonight again with yet another stellar performance against the Colchoneros. But the locals ended the game completely frustrated after two controversial decisions from the referee.
Let’s start with the positives from this game first, which was the outstanding first half we all lived at the Metropolitano. The level of football we all witnessed during the first 45 minutes is exactly what we want from this tournament. Mo Salah scored a shot from out of the box that got slightly deviated by one of his teammates. However, his individual effort was stunning and very much in tune with what he’s delivered recently. Not long after that, Naby Keita scored from outside of the box in a game that seemed decided early for the visitors.
Antoine Griezmann goes from hero to zero in a flash.
Ever since he arrived back from FC Barcelona, Antoine Griezmann has received nothing but disdain from the Atletico Madrid fans. They wanted a magical night from him at the biggest stage and tonight was that night. After those two early goals, the Frenchman responded with a brilliant brace that leveled everything back to square one. He combined brilliantly with Joao Felix in order to give hope to every Colchonero watching. Griezmann was finally responding but the second half was completely unexpected from him.
Early after the break, he committed a controversial foul that granted him a red card with nearly 40 minutes left on the clock. This was more than enough for Liverpool to work their experience in the game. With only a few minutes left, Mo Salah scored the winner before another controversial penalty that wasn’t awarded to Atletico Madrid. ‘Cholo’ Simeone has a lot to complain about with good reason.
