The Switzerland international sustained a serious injury against Tottenham that will keep him out of action for an extended duration.
Granit Xhaka is set for a spell to remain on the sidelines for “approximately three months,” Arsenal confirmed on Wednesday.
Xhaka was assisted by the medics as he limped off during Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday. The 29-year-old received lengthy treatment on the pitch after being caught by Lucas Moura, who inadvertently fell over him following a tackle by Thomas Partey, but couldn’t carry on.
A report on the official Arsenal website reads “Further to injuring his right knee during Sunday’s match against Tottenham, assessments and scans have confirmed that Granit Xhaka suffered a significant injury to his medial knee ligament.
“A specialist consultation took place in London on Tuesday evening which has determined that Granit does not require surgery. Granit’s recovery and rehabilitation programme will start immediately and we are aiming for him to be back in action in approximately three months.
“Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Granit to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
Xhaka’s injury comes as a huge blow for Arsenal as he has been a key player under Mikel Arteta while his unavailability leaves also leaves the manager short of options at midfield.
