An internal war has been taking place for months at FC Barcelona, but Ronald Koeman made it public with a recent statement he made.
FC Barcelona has been going through an internal problem that involved Ronald Koeman and Joan Laporta. For months, the overwhelming majority believes that the Dutch manager is not the ideal coach for Barcelona. Laporta has remained tight-lipped about the gaffer’s chances to keep his job for a long time. But internally, the coach is aware that almost nobody wants him around due to his pragmatic approach. A major part of Barcelona’s success lies on their ability to keep the style of play intact.
Laporta always bets on the academy players but Koeman doesn’t fully trust them. The best example of this is the relationship that the president has with players like Riqui Puig. He’s stated in the past that the youngster is the club’s future, whereas Koeman doesn’t seem to like the kid for the first squad. But the last straw took place earlier today with Koeman making an incendiary statement against his president. He didn’t only say that the Catalan club is saved because of him. But he also went after Laporta by stating he didn’t like the lack of support from the president.
Ronald Koeman could get sacked over this.
As the Champions League season starts this week, Ronald Koeman’s future seems directly linked to the match against Bayern Munich. If something similar to the 8-2 debacle happens, Laporta will possibly sack the Dutch manager. The initial results in La Liga are definitely not helping Koeman’s case. Instead of playing offensive football, he made the decision to park the bus in two consecutive matches.
Only Memphis Depay’s arrival is saving him from a tragedy in all competitions. The Spanish press keeps pushing a new agenda that involves managers such as Marc Overmars or Xavi Hernandez to take Koeman’s place. But results are the ones that will judge Koeman’s fate. If the squad does well against clubs like Bayern Munich, he will likely stay despite his problems with the club’s president. Joan Laporta simply can’t afford to kick him off the team unless it’s completely necessary.
