The Bundesliga stars faced long-term exile from the national team under the reign of Joachim Low, who is now no longer the DFB boss.

Hansi Flick insists “there is no age at which I exclude players”, implying Thomas Muller and Mats Hummel will be welcomed in his Germany team.

Despite being a mainstay at his club, Bayern Munich, Muller was exiled from the Germany national team under the tutelage of Joachim Low.

Hummels was also a victim of the former Die Mannschaft head coach’s policy of excluding the aging players from his squad so as to make room for the next generation of talent.

However, things did not go according to the script as Germany underperformed considerably at the international stage and he ultimately recalled the Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund stars for this summer’s European Championships.

Low earlier stepped down as the Germany boss, bringing an end to a 16-year-long managerial reign, with Flick becoming his successor.

“There is no age at which I exclude players from the national team,” Flick told the DFB’s official website in his first interview as the Germany manager.

“The most important thing is that the player is good enough and has a desire for the national team.”
