With the European tournament fast approaching and with him still stuck on the sidelines, the Liverpool defender is facing a race against time.
Virgil Van Dijk must himself decide whether he will make the Netherlands squad for the Euro 2020, says Frank de Boer.
Van Dijk is currently battling his way back from a cruciate ligament knee damage – an injury he suffered due to a rash challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The injury has forced the center-back to miss the majority of 2020-21 as he has been out of action for about seven months now. His absence has been immensely felt by Liverpool, who, as things stand, will miss out on Champions League football next season.
The 29-year-old is yet to rejoin training sessions with the rest of the Liverpool squad and there are fears that he could even fail to participate in the rescheduled European tournament, which is set to start in June.
However, the Netherlands head coach remains optimistic he can include Van Dijk in his final squad.
“I think he has to decide, it is his career,” stated De Boer on ESPN’s Good Morning Eredivisie show.
“I can imagine that he is in a dilemma. Can It mean something for Oranje? I hope he has made giant steps in his rehabilitation.”
