In an unfortunate turn of events, the Brazilian was forced off the pitch in his first match after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Mikel Arteta has issued a fitness update on David Luiz following his latest injury during Arsenal’s Premier League outing against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Clutching what appeared to be his left hamstring, the defender dropped to the ground in the second half of Arsenal’s 2-0 win at St. James’ Park. Unable to continue even after receiving medical treatment on the pitch, he was replaced by Calum Chambers at the 53-minute mark.
A variety of injuries have limited the experienced center-back’s time on the pitch this season. He missed all of the Gunners’ fixtures in April due to a knee problem, and it seems he just cannot catch a break.
Asked if Luiz could remain on the sidelines for the remainder of the season, Arteta replied, via Football London: “We don’t know.
“He felt something in his hamstring so it’s not good news. He’s put such a shift to be back with the team for the last few weeks after the knee surgery and it’s a real shame.”
Arteta added on the result: “We scored two goals, kept a clean sheet, won the points with some individual performances that really stand up.
“The only downside to it is probably the one with David and I think we lost him [David Luiz] today.
