Marcelo is in danger of missing Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Chelsea next Wednesday.
As part of random selection, Marcelo has been summoned to work at a polling station in the Spanish capital for the Madrid Assembly elections, which are taking place next week.
Election day is May 4, which is also when Real are set to fly to London ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge a day later.
The Spanish media report that Real have had an initial appeal to get the Brazilian relieved of his duties.
They have since gone back to the Madrid authorities, though El Mundo add that an exemption for the 32-year-old still appears some way away.
The report also states that those who are usually allowed to get out of such duties tend to only include key workers such as members of the emergency services.
According to the outlet, Madrid citizens were selected by a random draw to work during the elections on April 5.
Those selected were then given seven days to ‘allege justified and documented cause that prevents them from accepting the position’.
In normal times, Marcelo may otherwise have been able to travel alone to London on the day of the game.
But UEFA’s Covid protocols state that any player or member of staff must travel in the team’s bubble.
It means either Marcelo is given an exemption by the authorities at the last minute or he misses the key clash against Chelsea, with the tie 1-1 on aggregate following the first leg in Spain.
