Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would have some important decisions to make regarding some of his stars ahead of the summer.
It’s approaching that time of the year once again. The season is drawing nearer to a close and the next in line would be the transfer window. Chelsea were particularly active last summer and we can expect more of the same this time around.
New boss Thomas Tuchel looks to have steadied the ship a great deal but there is still work to be done. The most important decision would come in the striker position, with none of the Blues’ forwards proving to be consistent of late.
Tuchel might have poured cold water on the club’s links to Erling Haaland but the reality is they could indeed do with that type of player.
However, the Chelsea boss must first sort out some internal decisions. A number of Chelsea stars are out of contract in June, with no decision made on their future so far.
We take a look at the top three Chelsea stars who could leave the club this summer.
Olivier Giroud
It won’t be the first time the Frenchman has been linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge. He reportedly came close to joining Inter Milan in the 2020 winter window. Giroud was expected to leave in the summer of 2020 but Chelsea exercised an option to keep him at the club for one more season.
The 34-year-old might not boast the best of numbers but he has come big on multiple occasions when Chelsea needed him.
Tuchel seems to rate the Frenchman highly as well. Speaking of the player last week, the German manager said: “I think Oli can have a huge impact on our team because he has the experience, the physical presence and the ruthlessness in the box. This is his style of football and he has been very successful for many years.”
“It is my job to push him and give him the feeling that he is still important and important for me, which he is.”
However, the question is if Giroud will be willing to sit around for scraps of game-time rather than go somewhere he would be guaranteed regular football. With the World Cup set for 2022, Giroud will surely know he needs game-time and enough of it to be considered in Deschamps’ plans. It would be interesting to see what Chelsea decide to do with the Frenchman.
Thiago Silva
Many were critical about Chelsea when they moved to sign an aging Thiago Silva who departed PSG after a seven-year stint. However, the Brazillian has proved everyone wrong.
He has put in series of impressive displays and is arguably the Blue’s best defensive name this season. No surprise we put him in our list of top five Chelsea players so far this season.
Now, though? Silva has been sidelined for six weeks with a thigh problem. In the midst of that, Tuchel has seen Andreas Christensen rise emphatically into the starting team since replacing the Brazilian.
Tuchel recently spoke on Silva’s deal. “About his contract it’s too early and not the surrounding now to speak about it.
“It’s between him and the club, and me and the club, we will take this decision together. But if you watch the celebration pictures carefully you will see how young he looks.”
“He was running up and down the stairs, he was dressed like a 28-year-old.”
It would seem like Chelsea might be better off extending the Brazilian’s contract for another year.
Willy Caballero
The veteran keeper is out of contract at the end of the season and has only made 38 appearances since he joined the club in 2017.
It is important to have a third choice goalkeeper but Caballero might probably have to look for another club based on the look of things.
In fact, Tuchel still has to balance the game between Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arizzabalaga in goal.
Promoting a youngster like Karlo Ziger could make sense for the 19-year-old to stand in as a third-choice option.
Caballero has done little to no wrong but he has simply become surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
