La Liga denies relegation threats against FC Barcelona

During the most difficult days after FC Barcelona’s elections, there were some threats allegedly made from La Liga to the football club.

FC Barcelona was close to getting relegated by La Liga for not paying the insurance money they needed after the election. Joan Laporta went through some trouble in order to get that stipulated €125 million to president Javier Tebas. This is insurance money every new president needs to offer in case something goes wrong during his presidency.

According to what Toni Freixa recently tweeted, there was a very specific threat from La Liga president: “La Liga’s response. More specifically that of [its president] Javier Tebas was: ‘if you allow the swearing-in of the new president without depositing the bank guarantee, I will relegate Barca to the second division’. That is what Carles Tusquets explained to all three candidates.”

La Liga denies the accusations

Led by president Javier Tebas, La Liga also issued a statement where they deny the whole thing. It is well-known that the chairman doesn’t tend to get along with presidents from any of Spain’s football clubs. There is a feeling of hostility between them since he took office because they consider he isn’t doing his job correctly. It’s always been interesting watching Javier Tebas antagonizing most of La Liga’s powerful football clubs.

This is what La Liga wrote in a statement picked up by ESPN: “The one contact made by La Liga [during that time] was with the legal services. Who requested a legal report that was sent to the Electoral Board of FC Barcelona, in which there was no mention of the demotion to which Freixa refers to. Finally, La Liga wants to remember that in the event that the newly elected president of a club does not present the guarantee. It is only possible from a legal standpoint to repeat elections and never demotion.”
