Barcelona have been handed a major blow following news that Gerard Pique could be set for another spell on the sidelines.

On a night where Barcelona recorded a brilliant comeback against Sevilla, injury to Gerard Pique was the only gloom of the day.

The Spanish defender more or less saved his side with a last-gasp goal that saw the game forced into extra time. Braithwaite then struck late in the game to secure a 3-2 aggregate win for the Catalans over Sevilla.

In his post-match conference, Koeman did mention his worry about Pique, given that the defender had only just returned from injury.

The 34-year-old has already missed more than two months of action this season, due to a knee injury, and only returned in the recent 4-1 defeat to PSG.

The good news is that Koeman did say the latest injury to Pique is not the same that affected him last time. That means he might not be on the sidelines for too long.

Barcelona have now issued an update on the defender, with no timeline given yet for the duration of his injury.

A statement on the club’s website said: “The medical assessment and tests performed this morning have shown that first team player Gerard Piqué has a sprain in the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.”

“He is therefore unavailable and the evolution of the injury will determine when he returns”

“The Barça centre-back was a starter and played the 120 minutes in the superb win against Sevilla, as well as being one of the great protagonists of the night, leading the heroic comeback with a goal in added time that allowed Barça to force extra-time.”

There is no official confirmation yet but reports say Pique could be out for two to three weeks.
