After Juventus’ victory against Crotone in Serie A, Claudio Marchisio wanted to make fun of Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship with free-kicks.
The numbers don’t lie, Claudio Marchisio just shed some light on one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s biggest issues since he arrived at Juventus. Free-kicks used to be one of his signature moves with that ‘Folha Seca’ effect when he bent it. But there was a specific moment when he was at Real Madrid, where Ronaldo suddenly stopped scoring goals in this manner. The problem aggravated since he arrived at Juventus FC with only a single free-kick goal scored since he got to Italy.
Yesterday against Crotone, Ronaldo attempted another set-piece with no success. However, he did score a brace with his head that helped Juventus secure three points in Serie A. Claudio Marchisio keeps hearing criticism against the Portuguese star and he wanted to come out in his defense. Right after the game, Marchisio wrote the following tweet on his official account: “Apart from free kicks, Cristiano Ronaldo is still SCARY in the final 25 meters!!!”
Does Ronaldo even need free-kicks?
In reality, Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t need to score free-kicks due to his already impressive goal-tally in other areas. However, those good old days when he scored some of the most impressive set-pieces you will ever see are legendary. There was a sweet spot between 2007 and 2012 when Cristiano scored beautiful goals. But we like to remember the ones that people will keep in their memories for the rest of their lives.
The perfect free-kick came during a Premier League match between Manchester United and Portsmouth. It was an effect of the ball that nobody ever saw before. Perhaps Marchisio wants to see that again with this mockery of Ronaldo’s recent free-kick drought. Hopefully, the star will see it as a provocation and he starts practicing set-pìeces again. Fingers crossed for this to happen.
