On a day where Messi hit a historic milestone, Barcelona dropped points and were left frustrated by a late penalty from Cadiz.
Lionel Messi marked his latest Barcelona milestone with a goal against Cadiz as he surpassed club legend Xavi in the Camp Nou history books. However, the Argentine could not mark the day with a win.
Messi fired in a 32nd-minute penalty to give Barca the lead in the home fixture against Cadiz on Sunday. It was his first career goal against the away side.
The goal saw him continue the streak of a goal in his last six La Liga games. It also saw him move level with former teammate and close friend Luis Suarez in the race for the Pichichi.
Barcelona looked set to secure their eighth consecutive win in the league, but Cadiz had other plans.
With less than three minutes on the clock, a clumsy challenge from Clement Lenglet saw the Catalan giants concede a penalty.
Cadiz then scored a late penalty of their own through Alex Fernandez to earn a 1-1 draw.
Aside from Messi, Sergio Busquets also made history with the club after becoming only the fourth player to make 400 La Liga appearances in Barcelona colors.
Koeman’s side are now eight points off the pace and look more and more likely to be slipping away from the La Liga title race.
