Guardiola challenges Bayern to sextuple showdown with 2009 Barca

The high-flying Bavarians matched Guardiola’s legendary Barcelona team by winning a sixth title in under 12 months.

Pep Guardiola has challenged Bayern Munich to face his legendary 2009 Barcelona team in a battle for a seventh title in a row.

A 1-0 win over Mexican side Tigres in Thursday’s Club World Cup final secured Hansi Flick’s side a remarkable sixth consecutive major honor in a year following their successes in the Bundesliga, Champions League, DFB-Pokal, UEFA Super Cup, and DFL-Supercup.

The only other team to achieve such a feat before now was Barcelona’s 2009 squad, coached by none other than Guardiola.

“Big congratulations to all the Bayern family for this incredible success, to be the Club World Cup champions and especially to win six titles,” said the now-Manchester City manager in a video message.

“We are so proud, I am so proud, a big congratulations for everyone, especially Hansi [Flick], the players and the backroom staff for this amazing thing.

“But I would like to say to Hansi that you are the second team to win the six titles in a row!

“Before you, there was another team, Barcelona… so maybe I can call Messi and company and we can play for the seventh title? Tell me when and where and we will be there!”

Guardiola also coached Bayern between 2013 and 2016, winning seven major honors in the process. He almost led them to another sextuple in his debut campaign. A DFL-Supercup to Borussia Dortmund, however, cost them that chance despite adding Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup titles to their treble haul under the Catalan’s predecessor Jupp Heynckes from the previous campaign.
