Mourinho was pleased with his side’s performance against Everton but named the one thing that let them down.

In a game where every little detail mattered, Everton and Tottenham played out to an entertaining nine-goal thriller in the FA Cup. Two respected managers in Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho faced off but it was the latter who was on the losing end.

Spurs started brightly as they went ahead after only three minutes through Davinson Sanchez. They looked to be in control, but the game soon took a different turn.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, and Gylfi Sigurdsson all scored in the space of seven minutes to give Everton a two-goal advantage. Erik Lamela blasted it past Robin Olsen in stoppage time to bring his side right back into the tie.

The second half saw both sides level at 4-4 after 90 minutes but Bernard struck in the 97th minute to send Carlo Ancelotti’s side through.

Mourinho could only blame defensive errors as the reason his side fell victim to such a scoreline.

“We had the ball; we created, we had great movement, scored goals,” he said to BBC.

“Great character to fight against but goals only win games if you don’t make so many mistakes. We were the best team, winning 1-0; then in five minutes it was mistake, mistake, mistake; goal, goal, goal.”

It is rather poetic that a team managed by Mourinho lost via that scoreline. Back in 2004, he was critical of a similar result and he is now on the receiving end of things.
