The Portuguese coach is coming under increasing pressure at Spurs following a barren run of form.

Former Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet believes Jose Mourinho’s job is safe until the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City in April at the earliest.

Three defeats in a row have seen Spurs drop to ninth-place in the Premier League table. A seven-point gap now lies between them and fourth-placed Liverpool, with even Europa League qualification for next season now in doubt.

Thursday’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was, in fact, the first time in Mourinho’s career he had suffered back-to-back home defeats.

Despite the growing speculation over his future, however, Poyet doesn’t foresee any immediate change in north London.

Talking about Jose, I think the main thing for Jose is he’s already in a cup final,” Poyet told Stadium Astro.

“I think nothing will happen before that final. I don’t want to think that he’s under pressure because they want trophies, they’re in a final, and there’s still plenty of the season ahead.

“So I think it’s a slightly different situation with Frank Lampard, the amount of money that Chelsea spent in the summer.

“But you don’t know what is going on internally, so to comment on that would be unfair to Jose.

“But definitely the cup final helps, because that’s what they’re looking for, trophies.”
