After his second straight home defeat as a professional manager, it’s time to face the truth about Jose Mourinho. He is the shadow of his former self.

We all remember when Jose Mourinho was on track to become the best manager in football history. He started his career as Sir Bobby Robson’s assistant manager after the English legend spotted his player reports in Portugal. During his time at FC Barcelona, it was evident he was moving up on the scale to someday become a professional manager. Only he always knew he would get far, the rest of us were unbeknownst to his greatness.

Despite having a more defensive tactical approach with all his squads, Jose still found a wild level of success during his first major gig as a manager. The man literally won everything at FC Porto. One UEFA Cup, a Champions League, and several domestic titles later; Chelsea got a hold of him. The whole world was in awe of this man’s greatness that extended for nearly two decades. But something happened along the way that changed Jose Mourinho on a fundamental level. We will do our best to attempt an explanation.

Real Madrid was where something changed.

One could say that Jose Mourinho reached his peak at Real Madrid, even more than during his successful spell at Inter Milan. Granted, he won the treble with the Italian club but he managed to beat one of the best clubs in history during his time in Spain. That FC Barcelona squad led by Pep Guardiola was virtually impossible to beat but Jose Mourinho pulled it off. Our theory is that he changed several aspects of his personality in a negative manner with Barcelona’s demise as his ultimate purpose.

His relationship with some players became confrontational and they affected him on a fundamental level. As a result of this behavioral modification, Mourinho’s results were also deeply affected. We could’ve gotten the best manager in history but he chose to trade that recognition for a senseless battle against his own squad. This happened repeatedly before landing at Tottenham. And that is why Jose never lived up to the high expectations we all had of him. Don’t get us wrong though. He is still one of the best ever, but he is not the absolute best as we thought he could be.
