The Hawthorns was the place where West Brom received a visit from a powerful Manchester City in the Premier League. We got player ratings.
Manchester City sent a clear message to the Premier League contenders tonight against West Brom at the Hawthorns. Pep Guardiola was struggling to find the ideal sweet spot between attack and defense with a complicated season in regards to goal-average. However, hard work during practice finally paid off today. Despite having a tough time with a lack of strikers, the rest of the Manchester City players are starting to pick up steam.
Amongst the most impressive performers is Ilkay Gundogan, who scored a beautiful first-half brace this evening. Joao Cancelo also scored a strange goal that shouldn’t have counted, but VAR decided to not call an off-side in West Brom’s favor. Right before half-time, Riyad Mahrez scored the fourth goal of the evening.
Sterling seals the stellar performance.
After the break, Pep Guardiola asked his players to seal the performance with at least one more goal. This time, it was a wonderful collective effort in which Raheem Sterling got to score his goal. Throughout the rest of the second half, the Citizens only wanted to control the result and failed to score more goals despite controlling the ball.
This result brings them back to the top of the Premier League with the same number of goals as Manchester United. Right now, the Citizens depend on themselves to remain at the top. Judging on their 11-match streak of matches without a single defeat, we can say that Pep Guardiola’s Sky Blues are back to the top of their game. Knocking them off their perch will be extremely difficult for all their rivals.
