The injury crisis at Anfield is only growing worse as another center-back has been sidelined for an extended amount of time.
Liverpool defender Joel Matip is set to miss ‘about three weeks’ of action with a groin injury, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.
Matip pulled up sharply after damaging his adductor muscle during the 1-1 home stalemate against West Brom on Sunday.
The Cameroon defender faced a scan on the issue and subsequently missed the trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday.
“The normal stuff with these kind of injuries, [he will be out for] around about three weeks,” Jurgen Klopp said after the match, via the club’s official website.
Matip, according to his manager’s assessment, will not be able to feature in the next league outing against Southampton and in the 3rd round FA Cup clash against Aston Villa.
He is also expected to remain unavailable when his side take on Manchester United on January 17th.
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez also out injured, Nat Phillips and Fabinho paired up at the heart of the defense against Newcastle.
The Reds were denied another win after being held to a goalless draw at St James’ Park.
There was some positive news amid the injury-ravaged situation for Liverpool after all as Thiago Alcantara made his first appearance in more than two months.
