A major change on the Carabao Cup has been put into effect with the EFL putting the competition’s best interests at heart.
After much deliberation, the EFL have announced that the date for the Carabao Cup final will be pushed forward by two months. The reason for this is to ensure that fans will hopefully be allowed back at the grounds fully by then.
The competition is usually the first to close its curtains in England and usually sees the final game come sometime around February. This year’s edition was already scheduled to be played on February 28.
Hence, the new date for the Carabao Cup final is the 25th of April.
A statement on the EFL website read: “This season’s Carabao Cup Final has been rescheduled and will now take place on Sunday 25 April 2021, with a 4 pm kick-off.”
“It is the objective of the League to stage the Final with as many supporters in attendance as possible and the decision has therefore been taken to move the Final from its original date of Sunday 28 February 2021 to later in the year.”
“The number of fans permitted will be dependent on Government guidance in place at the time and it is hoped that moving the date to later in the year will give Clubs and their fans the best opportunity to attend in person.”
The decision comes after the introduction of new tier-four restrictions in many parts of England over the weekend.
Spectators remain banned from attending games in tier three and four.
The quarter-finals of the competition are being played on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The pick of the ties will see holders Manchester City travel to the Emirates stadium to take on a struggling Arsenal side.
