Ahead of Atletico Madrid’s upcoming La Liga match, Diego Simeone wanted to take the full blame for his top striker’s goal drought.

Diego Simeone tends to take the blame every time one of his players isn’t going through a good moment. Such is the case with Luis Suarez, who started the season pretty great but coronavirus got him and hindered his performances. As of right now, the Uruguay international hasn’t been able to produce a similar level of football compared to the one before catching the virus. Rather than pointing at his player, ‘Cholo’ Simeone wanted to protect him from any type of criticism.

He took all the blame for the situation in order to release him from any type of pressure he might be experiencing. Atletico Madrid is about to play Elche on Saturday in the Spanish La Liga. The Colchoneros need a new victory after the previous Madrid Derby they lost against Real Madrid. They obviously need the best Luis Suarez in order to get that victory.

Simeone’s defense of Luis Suarez.

“The person most responsible is me more than him,” Simeone responded when asked about Suarez through Marca. “Just out of COVID we played him, without giving him time [to get up to speed], but he is going to be very important for us. Let’s hope that tomorrow, after this week of training, we will find the footballer that the team needs; a determined guy and one of the best around.”

When asked about being title contenders, Simeone added: “Us being title contenders are opinions. German was with us and knows our way of thinking. We don’t go away from the game-by-game idea; we are not going to stop thinking along these lines. Tomorrow we have an opponent [Elche] who are doing well. Maybe the results have not been fair with what they want to do, with an Argentinean coach [Jorge Almiron], with a great step for his football and for sure he will do well in LaLiga.”
