The Gunners manager had to make some tough transfer decisions over the summer, much to Wright’s dismay.
Ian Wright admitted Emiliano Martinez’s decision to end a decade-long association with Arsenal for a summer switch to Aston Villa left him ‘devastated’.
Martinez starred in the Gunners goal in the second half of last season following a ligament injury to Bernd Leno. He proved to be a safe pair of hands in the club’s time of need, helping them win the FA Cup and Community Shield.
But when Leno recovered from injury, Mikel Arteta had a tough call to make on who would be his No.1.
Leno vs Martinez – 2020/21 Premier League season
The Arsenal boss settled on Leno and allowed Martinez to join fellow Premier League side Villa in a €17.4m deal in September.
“I was devastated to see him leave Arsenal, but he wants to be Argentina number one,” said former striker Wright as quoted in the Mirror.
“He has five clean sheets from nine Premier League games, and he is just a very good goalkeeper.
“He has done brilliantly at Villa and he is helping them to win games.”
Arsenal signed Runar Runarsson from French club Dijon to replace Martinez for this season.
