The Egyptian forward has enjoyed a goal-laden spell at Liverpool over the last few seasons, but it appears he may not be ‘indispensable’.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James reckons Mohamed Salah is not ‘indispensable’ and believes the club should entertain offers for him ‘if the price is right’.
Such a bold statement is something few would dare fabricate, considering Salah’s impressive feats. In almost three-and-a-half seasons, he has supplied 104 goals and 42 assists in 165 appearances. Premier League and Champions League titles have also arrived at Anfield.
But one downside to the 28-year-old’s continued success is the interest it gathers. La Liga champions Real Madrid, for instance, have been linked with a move in the last few years.
And with Zinedine Zidane’s side still a little short on firepower since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in 2018, they may pursue Salah or someone of similar caliber.
But if they were to make a bid for the two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, should Liverpool accept it?
“If the price is right, any player is going to be sold,” James told Stadium Astro. “It depends on what that price is.
“It’s a difficult argument because you have got a player who consistently scores goals, and that’s what every team wants.
“If you look at Man City with Sergio Aguero, it is like the dependency is on one player.
“If Salah went to Man City, I don’t think that would be good business for Liverpool. If he went to a different league and a different country, it would make more sense.
“I don’t think Liverpool are dependent on Salah and that’s a good thing for Jurgen Klopp. However, he would still need replacing.
“Who do you replace him with? [Diogo] Jota, Mane and Firmino aren’t going to play in every game, [Divock] Origi has been left by the wayside and isn’t going to fit that gap for Salah.
“I don’t think he’s indispensable.”
