Denis Irwin believes that the Manchester United newbie is set to make a difference for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Premier League.
Manchester United’s new signing Alex Telles might not be David Beckham, but will be helpful for the attackers according to Denis Irwin. The former Red Devils left-back supported the Brazilian newcomer to prove his worth at Old Trafford.
At the end of the summer transfer window, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer snapped Telles from Porto to add a new dimension at the back. The 27-year-old bagged a surprising 26 goals and 57 assists during his four-year spell in Portugal. And in modern-day football, the full-back position on either flank has taken a center stage of managerial tactics. That being said, Telles will have the perfect opportunity to prove his worth as a United winger.
Strike from the back.
The former Porto defender inspired the Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain. Though, unfortunately, Telles did not get to involve in any action since then due to testing positive for COVID19. Moreover, Luke Shaw suffered from an injury and his task now lays in the hands of the fresh face.
Irwin admits that Telles has what it takes to become a star in the Premier League. He told United’s official website: “It’s an opportunity for him now. With the games coming up, to get his foot in there.
“And sometimes it’s through lack of injuries that you manage to hold down the place of the left-back position.
“I mean, we haven’t seen him too much [from him] defensively wise, but the Premier League is a tough league and he’s a full-back, so he’ll have to be good defensively. But we’ve already seen his qualities going forward in that game in the 70 or so minutes he played.”
Irwin added: “There’s no doubt that, on set-pieces, he’s going to be a huge asset to us in that respect.
“Also, I’m not going to compare him to David Beckham! But it looks like he’s got a fantastic left foot that can whip a ball in with pace. Which our strikers would love to get in at the end of.”
