The Portuguese tactician has long been addressed by his self-assigned moniker ‘the special one’ but now that label could change.
Jose Mourinho provoked a feverish stir upon his arrival back in the Premier League back in 2004 when he gave a taste of his quirky personality and outspokenness – something the English media was still largely unaware of.
Speaking in the inaugural press conference ahead of his first season in charge of Chelsea, Mourinho described himself as ‘The Special One’.
The manager had risen to prominence after leading underdogs FC Porto to Champions League glory in 2004.
He went on to enjoy a wealth of success at Chelsea, including helping the team to back to back Premier League titles, and his self-proclaimed nickname, which started to look justified, stuck on.
The 57-year-old has since had spells at Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea again, and has never failed to deliver a silverware, cementing his status as one of the best coaches in the world and, probably, of all time.
Quizzed by what nickname he wants to be identified with now in an interview with Tencent Sport, Mourinho replied, via ESPN: “The ‘Experienced One.’ I am very experienced.
“Basically everything that happens to me in football now is deja vu, is something that has happened to me before.
“Coaching you just need your brain, an accumulation of experiences and knowledge can only make you better.”
