Today we celebrate the 57th birthday of Manchester United and Denmark legend Peter Schmeichel by taking a brief look back on his career story.

Peter Boleslaw Schmeichel is a former Danish footballer who was voted twice as the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper (1992 & 1993) and UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year on three occasions (1992, 1993, & 1998).

The great Dane was a fierce competitor on the pitch and became famous for his tall frame (1.91m) and an approximate weight of 100 kg. He even had extra large jerseys specially made just for him.

But what Schmeichel lacked in overall physique, he more than made up for it in goal.

The 57-year-old developed excellent reflexes, agility, and shot-stopping skills between the posts. His trademark ‘star jumps’ became a big hit and won him widespread praise from former and current goalkeepers alike.

Fans remember him best for his glory-laden spell at Manchester United between 1991 and 1999. He made 363 appearances, keeping an impressive 163 clean sheets and winning 15 trophies. Among his successes were five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Schmeichel is also Denmark’s most capped player in history and even bagged 10 goals for the national team. His finest moment, without a doubt, was helping the Danish Dynamite win the European championship in 1992.

After his retirement in 2003, Schmeichel was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame and a year later into the ‘125 greatest living footballers’ at the FIFA 100 celebrations.

His son, Kasper, plays for Leicester City in the Premier League.

Everyone here on Ace Football wishes Peter a happy 57th birthday and all the best for the upcoming year.
